10-Day Alcohol Ban During Eid Al Adha 2016

Eid al-Adha 2016 is expected to begin on Sunday, September 11. In relation to this holy celebration, Qatar is imposing a 10-day alcohol ban. This means alcohol will not be served for a period of 10 days by Qatar’s hotels as well as the only off-license shop.

The QTA (Qatar Tourism Authority) has sent a statement to various hotels warning that no alcohol should be sold in public places in the 9 days that lead up to Eid as well as the day itself. These places include restaurants and bars.

Qatar Distribution Company (QDC) is the only retail outlet in Qatar that is licensed to distribute alcohol, wines and spirits. They have sent text messages to those who have alcohol permits indicating that their branch in Abu Hamour will be closed from 2 September until the 2nd day of Eid. This means that they are serious in implementing this alcohol ban for this year.

Eid al-Adha is called the Festival of Sacrifice where it celebrates the Ibrahim’s sacrifice of his son, according to God’s command.

Drink moderately is what we commonly hear during an alcoholic drink advertisement. Here in Qatar, I would say “Drink appropriately and drink with permit/license”, of course, if you don’t want to be in trouble.

The actual dates of Eid will be confirmed by officials in Saudi Arabia on September 1 based on the moon sighting. If a new moon will be seen 1 September, then the 1st day of Eid will be on 11 September. However, if the moon will not be visible on the 1st day, then the festival will be celebrated on 12 September.
