Qatar has launched a new service allowing food-sector workers to take the Food Handler Licensing Examination outside the country before they arrive for work.
The Ministry of Public Health said the service is available through accredited examination centers in several countries and is meant to help employers check a worker’s food-safety knowledge before recruitment.
The service was announced on September 10, 2026.
Exam Can Be Taken Before Arrival
Workers applying for jobs in restaurants, hotels, catering companies, supermarkets, bakeries, and other food establishments may be covered, depending on the professional categories listed by the Ministry.
The exam is available in Arabic and English.
It also gives food establishments a detailed report on the candidate’s performance in different food-safety areas.
These reports can help employers identify a worker’s strengths, training needs, and readiness for the job.
Passing Abroad Means No Repeat Exam in Qatar
One of the main benefits is that a worker who passes the examination outside Qatar will not need to take the same exam again after arriving.
Once the candidate passes, the food establishment may continue the process of getting the required professional practice license.
This could save time for both workers and employers during onboarding.
Important: The Overseas Exam Is Still Optional
For now, taking the Food Handler Licensing Examination outside Qatar is optional.
The Ministry made clear that it is not yet a requirement for recruiting food-sector workers.
However, Qatar is working toward making the professional practice license mandatory in the future.
The implementation date and procedures will be announced later once preparations are complete.
Qatar Has Licensed More Than 10,000 Food Handlers
The new overseas exam service is part of Qatar’s Food Handler Licensing Program, which has been in place since 2021.
According to the Ministry, 10,630 food handlers have already been licensed under the program.
Workers and food establishments interested in the new service can check the Ministry of Public Health website for covered job categories, registration steps, and accredited examination centers outside Qatar.
What Applicants Should Know
Applicants should first confirm whether their job is covered by the Food Handler Licensing Program and whether an accredited testing center is available in their country.
Because the overseas examination is still optional, workers should also check with their employer or recruitment agency before paying for or scheduling any test.
