Finding a Balance Between Work and Personal Life

What is work-life balance? Career experts say that it is the state of equilibrium where a person finds the right balance between the demands of the career and the personal life.

If you can find this balance, you will have a happier outlook on life. You won’t get burned out quickly, too. When you think about it, a work-life balance will benefit both the employer and the employee.

Here are some tips you can follow:

  • Strive for a realistic work-life balance. Accept the fact that you will not have equal time for work and personal life every day. Instead, you could accept that there will be some days when you will have to spend more time at work. And on some days, you can devote time to pursue your interests.
  • Choose a job that you value. Society expects that you need to work. And it is important to choose the job that makes you happy. If your work drains your energy to do activities outside work, then you are not in the right job. You don’t necessarily have to land the perfect job. But as long as it has some aspects that get you excited, you are in a good place.
  • Your health is essential. Your main concern is keeping yourself healthy physically, emotionally, and mentally. If you need to attend therapy sessions even if it means leaving for work early or missing out on night outs, it is okay. You can also take some time off if you are unwell.
  • Unplug from time to time. You don’t have to spend all your working hours working or doing something related to it. If you are in transit, why not meditate instead of checking your emails?
  • Go on vacation. Some workers are afraid to go on vacations because they will come back to work swamped with tasks. If you want to unplug, taking a vacation is the way to go. Whether you are taking a day off or planning an out-of-town trip, the idea is to get away from work. You need to learn to plan properly so you don’t disrupt your workflow even if you take a break now and then.
  • Set aside time for you and your loved one. You don’t have to devote all your time to your job. Make time to pursue other activities that make you happy. After all, you are a person with a life before you started working.
  • Set boundaries with work. When you leave your workplace, tell yourself to stop thinking about work. Setting boundaries means you will not answer emails or phone calls. If you have a separate work phone, learn to switch it off.
  • Stick to your goals and priorities. When you list down your goals and create a to-do list, ensure that you follow your plan. Avoid distraction.
  • Opt for a flexible workplace. Having a flexible schedule allows you to follow a lifestyle that suits you.
  • Have a supportive manager. While this option is beyond your control, be grateful if your manager supports the employees. You will appreciate having such a leader at work.
