Qatar won its bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup back in 2010. Back then and until now, there are some critics pointing to several factors why Qatar isn’t a great host. For one, they say the country is too small, or that the climate is not ideal. But of course, the citizens of Qatar are elated with the news, and the country has made ample preparation to make the event a success.
Filipinos living and working in Qatar are definitely looking forward to this event. Philippine Football has made somewhat of a resurgence with the forming of the Azkals National Team. It is far from qualifying for the world stage, but it is heading towards the right direction.
This article focuses on why Qatar is indeed a great host country for the World Cup. For a country that hosts a lot of happenings, this one is sure to be one of the biggest events ever to happen! The following are some of its key points.
Qatar Prepares as 2022 World Cup Host
1. Small Country, Better Transportation
Some argue that the country’s small size means Qatar will not be able to handle such a huge international event. When the tourists come in, they will probably do so in huge numbers that Qatar has never seen before. However, Qatar addresses this issue by stating this is actually an advantage, as 10 out of 12 of the stadiums are relatively close to each other. Going from one stadium to another will be much easier, and so fans can actually move from one stadium to the next, witnessing several games in a day.
2. Weather Concerns
Admittedly, Qatar’s weather, especially during the summer, can be quite daunting. Temperatures can actually reach up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and playing any sport under such conditions can be dangerous. This is resolved by the government simply by hosting the World Cup during the winter, between the months of November and December.
3. Showcasing the Middle East
Qatar has indeed handled the criticisms and problems well, and are making the necessary steps to ensure the event will push through seamlessly. But aside from being able to do all these, hosting the World Cup is also a great opportunity for Qatar and the Middle East in general. For several years now, the Arab world has been showcased by social media in a negative light; showing images of violence, war. The country has been spoken about in a disparaging manner.
With Qatar hosting such an international sports event, an opportunity presents itself to show the world that it’s really fun in the Middle East, and that Qatar is a region filled with diversity and is rich in culture!
4. Awesome Stadiums
Qatar has an amazing plan when it comes to what the country will do with the built stadiums after the event is over. These stadiums are actually made of modular upper levels that can be removed and transported to other places. Qatar plans to donate these to the poorest countries to help them enhance their football programs.
