How OFWs Can Get Up to Php 14,500 for Skills Training Through OWWA

Overseas Filipino workers who want to learn a new skill or prepare for another job may be able to get up to Php 14,500 in training assistance through an OWWA program.

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) offers the Skills-for-Employment Scholarship Program or SESP, which supports short-term technical and vocational training for qualified OFWs and their dependents.

Under the program, OWWA provides training assistance of up to ₱14,500 per course.

For overseas Filipino workers, this could be useful for those preparing for a different career, planning their eventual return to the Philippines, or simply wanting to add another qualification.

How OFWs Can Get Up to Php 14,500 for Skills Training Through OWWA

Who can qualify for the Php 14,500 assistance?

According to OWWA, SESP is available to eligible active OWWA members and qualified dependents.

The training must be taken through institutions accredited by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), or other government training institutions.

OWWA says the amount provided is based on the actual training cost, with assistance capped at Php 14,500 per course.

That means applicants should not automatically expect to receive Php 14,500 in cash. The benefit is intended to cover eligible training expenses up to that limit.

What courses can OFWs take?

SESP is intended for short-term technical and vocational courses that can help improve an OFW’s employment skills.

Rather than enrolling in just any private course, applicants should first check whether their chosen program and training provider meet OWWA’s requirements.

OWWA also maintains other short-term training programs, including separate programs for seafarers and information technology training, so the most suitable option may depend on the OFW’s occupation and goals.

How can OFWs in Qatar apply?

OFWs should first check their OWWA membership status and the eligibility requirements for SESP.

Because requirements and processing arrangements may depend on the applicant’s circumstances, Qatar-based OFWs can also contact the Migrant Workers Office in Doha or OWWA for guidance before enrolling or paying for a course.
