don't worry be happy

Sometimes, working abroad can take a toll on a person. The differences in culture may be too much or we get homesick. The novelty of working in a foreign country becomes tiring. So it should not come as a surprise that some overseas workers begin to think of going home.

Fortunately, you can overcome this feeling. Here are some tips to help you get out of a rut:

1. Love your work.

Wise people believe that you should love what you do so it does not feel like work. All workers, especially the OFWs could follow this mantra to help them adjust to their jobs. You will begin to appreciate your work when you know how important your role is. The work you do will impact the lives of others. You will help them lead easier lives. Most importantly, the skills you will learn from your job will improve you.

2. Appreciate your blessings.

Whenever you feel like giving up, take time to reflect on the opportunity given to you. There are other Filipinos who want to work abroad but are not qualified.

3. Think about the consequences.

If you are on the verge of quitting, think of the impact of your decision. Think of the people around you. What will be the result of your actions? Will you need to face a penalty? Will you be able to pay your bills if you come home?

4. Consider your work as an opportunity.

Some contracts are good for only a few years. Your stay abroad will only be temporary. So while you have your job, take time to enjoy the sights and culture around you. You might not have another chance to go back there again.

5. Deal with your emotions.

Find out why you are unhappy. Perhaps you are homesick, or the pressure at work is unbearable at times. Once you know the reason, find a solution for it. If you are homesick, why not call your family often? If you feel pressured, try to reach out to colleagues. You could also request to take a leave from work to help you unwind.

6. Try to get along with your colleagues.

When you are in a new workplace, you could try to be friends with the people you work with. You will feel happy when you are on good terms with your co-workers. You don’t even have to get along well with everyone. But you will get more work done when you are at ease with most of your colleagues. Always treat them well to have a harmonious workplace.

7. Gain new skills.

Through your work, you will be given responsibilities. You will also receive training, whether formal or informal, to help you accomplish your tasks.

8. Take up a new hobby.

When you are working abroad, you should not spend all your time working. Find other activities that will interest you, or even enroll in a class.

9. Live Like a Local.

Working in a foreign country like Qatar lets you experience the change of seasons.  You will adapt to the local customs to help you get through each season. You might visit the beach or wear thick clothes that you don’t usually wear back home.

10. Collect memories.

Remember that your experience abroad will help shape your personality. You will also learn more about yourself and your co-workers. Enjoy your experience so you will have a lot of stories to tell when you come home.

These are some suggestions to help you enjoy your work. Pretty soon, you have completed your contract. You can look forward to another stint abroad.
